CONCLUSION, MR.SPOCK AND 2 SUGESTIONS

And we are finishing our course...

At this 33 lessons we tried to teach to you the basics of this new plataform for application development: Squeak-Croquet.

I imagine that you are a little disapointed because the peer-to-peer 3D chat with avatares is not available today (NOV 2004) yet.

But this is not the more urgent thing to be implemented.

My opinion: it's not logical the "main page", the "main interface" of Croquet to be a 2D desktop.

My first sugestion is the implementation of an interface like we have presented:

This interface has three 2D windows having, each one, a main 3D space inside .

The "Privare area" will be for applications that can access the resources of the user's machine (hard disk etc.).

In the "Solo area" the user will "install" Portals for "remote spaces" like we did in one of our lessons - the "space SpR8" from www.dmu.com

And the "Multi" area will be reserved for "installation" of spaces in the mode "peer-to-peer" (directly from another Croquet user) where would be possible the interation of persons through avatares and work group.

You have seeing in that lesson - the more important of this course - that, for an IT professional, it's not dificult to "install" a remote space. You need to have the "make-function" received from the owner of the space, only this. Having it, re-execute the initializeDefaultSpace using the "script for Workspace". But for a "normal human" this can be very confuse and dificult.

So, our 2nd sugestion: it's important the implementation of an easy "installer" where the user types only the Domain Name of a site and the name of the remote space and it will be downloaded and installed - like in the figure.

I know that Croquet is an open-source project and, better than make "sugestions for implementations", a person would try to implement the sugestion by itself, writing the code . Unfortunatelly I don't have the required skill to do this.

Finally: I think that Croquet will not kill the Internet Browser. Croquet and IE will live together. Like televison did not kill movies and movies did not kill teather; they are living together.

I imagine that, if, by example, the Discovery Channel likes to present a content about dinos, a Croquet space, not a traditional web site, would be the better vehicle for this, because the visitor could "walk" in the space looking 3D animated models of the dinos. Or, another example more commercial: Ford or GM could have a Croquet space where we could "walk" around the models of cars of the next year.

But only the future will say if I am right or not.

Thanks. And now, go to our NEW COURSE about Croquet 3D programming!
