For the creation of the graphic part of islands we will use "the BCG holly trinity": Blender, Croquet and GIMP. A complete tool belt to do it.
WARNING: This tutorials serie IS NOT for designers, graphics artists. It's for programers. But we will teach some basics of 3D modeling (using Blender) because a programer needs to create many times drafts of the environment, of the objects that will have interactivity, to do the AI programming.
So we will use only VERY SIMPLE meshes and textures in the exercices. Something that you, programer, can create by yourself, even not beeing an artist.
In "the real life", you will work having a designer by partner.
This tutorials can be useful for designers too. They need to know something about programming to work with an specialist.
OK. Letīs go!
The first thing you need to do is the download of three things:
1 - Inside a new folder: C:\BCGkit download (rightclick):
We will talk about what is inside the kit soon.
2 - Blender 2.41 (Python 2.4 included)
Blender is the open source software for 3D modeling, animation, rendering, post-production, interactive creation and playback. Available for all major operating systems under the GNU General Public License. Here we will use the version for Windows.
Blender 2.41 is not available anymore from the official Blender site. And our tutorials only work if you are using this version!!! You can download a "valid" Blender for Windows from the link:
2 - GIMP 2.2.10 and GTK+ 2.8.9
GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages. We will use here the Windows version. You need to install first the GTK+.
You can find the downloads and more informations about GIMP in its official site .
We don't recoment the use of different versions from the softwares listed for our exercices. Only if you are an IT master...
OK. It's all for now. Do all the downloads and go to the next lesson to learn what to do.
